Airtel introduces Specialized Packages for Corporate, SME & HNIs

Riding on its promise to provide more value to subscribers on its network, leading telecoms operator, Airtel Nigeria, has launched new pocket-friendly packages tailored for corporate organisations, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs), post-paid individuals and BlackBerry users.
The new packages, which offer attractive tariffs including generous data volumes, will now make it possible for Airtel customers on this platforms to communicate freely with ease and use their data enabled devices without burning holes in their pockets.
According to Deepak Srivastava, Airtel’s Chief Operating Officer, the latest development is in line with its commitment in endearing the brand to Nigerians with affordable telecoms solutions for their delights. He said the package was conceived to address the needs of its customers in various segments namely: Corporate Organisations, Small and Medium Enterprise (SME), individual postpaid customers and BlackBerry users.
For Corporate organisations to benefit from the latest offer, Srivastava revealed that three distinctive categories namely Corporate Plus; Corporate Pro and Corporate Premium have been created, each of which comes with its own unique voice, SMS and data tariffs. Also, free talk minutes, SMS and data of up to 1GB is available. Customers under a Close User Group (CUG) of 100 staff and above can make Airtel to Airtel calls for 17k/sec and 25k/sec to other networks.
For the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), the plan is split two-ways namely; SME Plus and SME Pro. Both plans have discounted tariffs in voice (including international calls) for 17k/sec and 30k/sec to other networks, SMS and data. In addition, there is free airtime, complimentary data and up 30 free SMSes. A SME should have 10 to 99 lines under the CUG to benefit from this plan.
Under the Retail or individual category, there are four different plans; The Advance plan (annual), Intermediate plan (monthly), Basic and Family plans. Here, it is possible to make 15k/sec for Airtel to Airtel calls and 25k/sec to other networks. Also, free calls, SMS and data as well as up to 150 free CUG minutes is available.
To complete the customer cycle, BlackBerry users were not left out in the package plans as Srivastava stated. He said the company is offering heavily discounted monthly subscription in both the Enterprise and Internet services with free CUG Airtel to Airtel airtime.
“Airtel is aware of the critical role the Small and Medium Enterprises play as the engine of growth in any economy especially in Nigeria, hence the need for us to focus on assisting this segment achieve their goals of which communication plays a critical role. LG joins BMW, Audi to Osram infrigment suit row


LG Electronics said that they have officially filed a lawsuit with a South Korean court seeking to block some local branches of Germany’s BMW AG and Audi AG from selling vehicles equipped with lighting products made by Osram, which the Korean company allege infringe their patents.
“We’ve expanded the legal fight to auto makers using LED package products manufactured by Osram, as the infringed products are having an increasingly negative impact on the fast-growing local LED industry,” LG Electronics said in a statement.
Osram is the world’s No.2 lighting company after Philips, ahead of General Electric Co. The lawsuit is the latest in a series of patent litigation involving LG Electronics, Samsung LED and Osram.  This move however, is seen as a retaliation after Osram recently filed a complaint in Korea against LG, as well as Samsung, for patent violations ― a move it has already taken in four other countries including China and the United States.
``LG sued Osram at the Seoul Central District Court for purportedly infringing on LG-owned patents such as LED chips and packaging technologies that are widely used in LED light bulbs and cars,’’ said Lim Young-min, a senior LG spokesman.  LEDs are becoming increasingly popular and are widely used in aviation, automobiles, televisions and mobile phone screens. The two LG companies have 4,000 patent rights globally related to LED technology. The move opens a new front in the continuing legal spat between the South Korean companies and Osram over light-emitting-diode lighting technology, as they struggle for dominance in a fast-growing LED lighting market. LED lights, once used primarily in indicator lamps, are now installed in television screens and aviation and automotive lighting, as well as traffic signals.
"We've expanded the legal fight to auto makers using LED package products manufactured by Osram, as the infringed products are having an increasingly negative impact on the fast-growing local LED industry," LG Electronics said in a statement. The company asked the court to issue an interim injunction to block the sales while the case is being argued.
Osram's Korean unit declined to comment. A spokesman for BMW said he couldn't yet confirm that an injunction had been received, adding that the company would have to "examine the matter extensively" before it could comment. A spokesman for Volkswagen AG's Audi brand said it hasn't yet received an injunction.
Osram's move is said to be in response to a complaint LG had filed to the trade commission against Osram in July, seeking a ban on the importation of the company's LED products into Korea. 
If the court allows LG's request, that could be a setback to BMW, the world's largest luxury carmaker, and Audi, a unit of Volkswagen. Korean sales account for just around 1 percent of these carmakers' global sales, but European models are steadily gaining market share in Korea following a free-trade deal with the European Union in July.
BMW, the most popular imported brand in Korea, raised its market share sharply in the country as Japanese rivals lost ground following the earthquake there in March. BMW sold 16,579 cars in the first eight months of this year, up 62 percent from a year ago, and owns 24 percent of the imported-car market in Korea, according to data by Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association.
Audi also increased sales by a quarter to 6,668 cars in the first eight months of this year to take 9.6 percent of the imported-car market. Imported cars account for less than 10 percent of South Korea's auto market dominated by local brands such as Hyundai Motor , but sales growth is far outstripping that of domestic companies.

For Tech shoppers, Viewsonic Unveil 3 Tablets, other gadgets


Viewsonic has brought out a new collection of holiday shopping gadgets which comprise the ViewPad 7x, ViewPad 7e, and ViewPad 10pro tablets, V3D245 and V3D231 3D monitors, along with PJD5523w 3D Ready Projection. This selection debuted at Pepcom’s media event which showcases gadgets and devices for the holiday season.
The PJD5523w 3D Ready Projection displays a widescreen 1280 x 800 WXGA native resolution. Also, it features high brightness level with 2,700 ANSI lumens and 3.000:1 contrast ratio. It offers a native 720p HD image with 1080p Full HD signal capabilities and an HDMI port as well.

The ViewPad 7e sits comfortably on the low-end of tablets, and should be one of the more inexpensive options as it becomes available worldwide. It's a 7-inch tablet, designed largely as an ebook reader; it comes with Kindle software installed. Few details are known, but it's clear that the 7e will be running a pre-Honeycomb (and thus phone-optimized) version of Android, its aspect ratio is 4:3 rather than the 16:9 on most Android tablets, and it will be inexpensive as tablets go. Rather than a one-tablet-fits-all approach, Viewsonic wants to tailor its tablets to specific users and use cases. Its product range is pretty wide at this point, and the company shows no sign of slowing down.
The ViewPad 7x is a 7-inch tablet powered with the Nvidia Tegra 2 Dual Core A9 1GHz processor and Android Honeycomb version 3.2 operating system. It features a 5MP main and a 2MP secondary camera on the outside, along with an HDMI output. Other specifications include 1080p full HD capabilities, DLNA connectivity, and SRS surround sound.
Running on the Gingerbread 2.3 OS, the ViewPad 7e is a 7-inch tablet powered by a 1GHz processor. Also integrated with a Flash version 10.3, it provides access to Amazon services for Android, including the Kindle app. On the other hand, the ViewPad 10pro with dual OS is a 10.1-inch device embedded with an Intel 1.5GHz Atom Oak Trail processor Z670. With Windows 7 as the primary operating system, Android 2.3 runs as an application to enable easy switching. The device features a 1.3MP camera and offers 1080p full HD resolution.
Other two gadgets to color the holidays include the 3D monitor V3D245 & V3D231, the former being a 24-inch device while the latter measuring an inch less. Both LED monitors are designed to be compatible with 3D Blu-ray players and PS3s, along with other PC- and console-based devices. Embedded with SRS Premium Sound audio speakers, the monitors also possess HDMI 1.4 input.
The V3D245 3D monitor is now available at a price of $499 (approx Rs. 23, 845), inclusive of a pair of Nvidia 3D Vision active stereo 3D glasses. The ViewPad 10pro can also be purchased now at a price of $599 (approx Rs. 28, 623) for the Windows 7 Home Premium (16GB SSD hard drive) with Android 2.3 version. The price for the same operating system paired with Windows 7 professional (32GB SSD hard drive) would be $699 (approx N110,000), while the PJD5523w 3D Ready projector comes with a price tag of $599 (approx N95,000). The ViewPad 7x and ViewPad 7e is already in the Nigerian market and is available at a price of $379 (approx N70,000).

Major Mobile Brands pledge support for Isis m-commerce standards

Isis, the joint venture between AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless, announced today that HTC, LG, Motorola Mobility, RIM, Samsung Mobile and Sony Ericsson will introduce NFC-enabled mobile devices that implement Isis' NFC and technology standards. For consumers who have or purchase smartphones that are not NFC-enabled, Isis is working with DeviceFidelity to add NFC functionality to the mobile device, ensuring a wide range of consumer choice.
"Isis' technology standards provide the direction and certainty needed for the development and deployment of NFC devices and the mobile commerce ecosystem," said Scott Mulloy, chief technology officer, Isis. "Working together with the device makers and our founding mobile carriers, Isis can provide the consumer choice and scale necessary for widespread adoption of mobile commerce."

Nokia, Pearson, Airtel, Train Public School Teachers in Lagos


Global phone maker, Nokia, Pearson Foundation, and leading telecommunications service provider, Airtel Nigeria have completed the training of teachers in Public Schools in Lagos State on the use of mobile technology to deliver rich media content to students in their classrooms.
The teachers, 62 in all from 32 public schools in Lagos State were trained under the Airtel, Nokia, and Pearson Foundation technology-driven education initiative, BridgeIT, in collaboration with the Lagos state government through the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).
The schools are part of a pre-pilot program and the number is expected to grow to more grade levels and subject areas over the next two years. BridgeIT combines mobile technology, the use of mobile phones and teachers to deliver and share high quality educational content in public schools where IT infrastructure may be limited.
Teachers will receive digital educational programming – videos, pictures, text, and audio files – over mobile network already in use in their community, and are empowered to share these materials with students in ways that improve student learning.
The commencement of the pilot BridgeIT programme is a follow up to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Nokia, Pearson, Airtel and Longman with the Lagos State Government early in May, this year.
In the arrangement, while Nokia will provide the technology - a mobile application known as Nokia Education Delivery (NED) - Pearson Foundation, the charitable arm of the world’s largest learning company – Pearson - will provide the educational content. Similarly, Nigeria’s leading telecom operator, Airtel Nigeria, has the duty to provide the network coverage that will enable teachers download the videos to their phones, which are used as instructional materials.
After viewing educational content, students participate in interactive lessons facilitated by teachers who have benefited from professional development workshops that promote collaboration and the use of mobile technology in the classroom. The implementation of the programme begins this academic session in schools drawn mostly from suburban parts of Lagos.
According to a statement from the partners to the BridgeIT, the working of the programme follows a simple technique:  ‘videos are stored on a remote server and organized according to subject and grade. By connecting the mobile phone to a TV or a projector, the teacher can play the videos to a class to illustrate any relevant topic in the school curriculum.’
Besides other major benefits, BridgeIT also offers teachers in public schools a unique opportunity to sharpen their skills and upgrade themselves through well structured professional development efforts.
While the first phase of the implementation of BridgeIT begins this month of September in 32 schools, the consortium have given the assurance that the programme will eventually be extended to many other hundreds of schools in the country in the next three years.
Partners to the programme have individually and collectively reaffirmed their commitment to the intellectual development of the Nigerian child through the BridgeIT programme, stating that the initial focus of the programme would be the critical subjects of Mathematics, English Language and Science.
 “This effort allows students in Nigeria to benefit from the BridgeIT model and extends the Pearson Foundation’s commitment to student achievement and teacher ability across the globe,” explained Pearson Foundation President and CEO Mark Nieker.
On his part, the General Manager of Nokia West Africa, James Rutherfoord said Nokia is actively involved in communities around the world to create tangible social benefits. According to him, Nokia is committed to enhancing the quality of life around the world by using mobile technology to stimulate social and economic development. In his words, “realizing that government cannot shoulder the educational challenges of a developing country like Nigeria alone, Nokia feels a sense of responsibility to contribute its quota in helping to improve the delivery of public educational services by improving both the performance of students and the quality of teaching in our public schools”.
Mr. Rutherfoord further disclosed that workshops have been conducted to train teachers in using the software to optimize their lesson plans using video content. He thanked Airtel for making it possible for the videos to be downloaded over its mobile network.
The BridgeIT model has enjoyed success in the Philippines, Tanzania, Chile, Colombia, and India. Each implementation of the program has been characterized by the utilization of the latest educational technologies, the empowerment of teachers to fully utilize mobile technology in the classroom, and the following of a tailored and focused program for a sustainable, scalable, and replicable implementation in partnership with local education ministries and agencies.

Next-geneveration Intel CPUs to improve mobile graphics and battery life


Intel revealed more details about the planned successors for its current-generation SandyBridge processors at its Intel Developers Forum in San Francisco recently. Coming in the second quarter of 2012 will be IvyBridge, a 22nm die-shrink "tick" to SandyBridge's "toick." IvyBridge will benefit from Intel's new 3D tri-gate transistor technology, offering as much as a 37 percent power efficiency improvement along with what looks like serious integrated graphics improvements. Following that in 2013 will be the 22nm Haswell architecture, which promises "all day" laptop battery life along with up to 10 days of what Intel is calling "connected standby."
Sandy Bridge offered significant performance over last generation Intel CPUs within the same power envelop. Additionally, Intel integrated the GPU onto the same die as the CPU, connecting the two with a shared L3 cache. While Intel has had a pretty poor reputation with its integrated graphics solutions, the architectural improvements finally put the Intel HD3000 IGP included on most mobile SandyBridge chips on par with even low-end discrete GPUs. The performance boost was enough for Apple to ditch NVIDIA GPUs in its MacBook Air and other low-end machines.
Ivy Bridge will mainly be a die shrink of the SandyBridge architecture down to 22nm. To jump down to that process node, Intel basically reinvented how transistors and other components are etched into silicon wafers. The company developed a three-dimensional "tri-gate" transistor which offers serious efficiency improvements over traditional planar design techniques. In particular, it increases the usable frequency at a given voltage level, allowing Intel to either boost the frequency or reduce power—or some combination of the two.
The power savings will matter a great deal for mobile computing, including devices like notebooks and "ultrabooks." For instance, Intel will make an IvyBridge quad-core Core i7 part with a 35W TDP. As AnandTech notes, that means Apple could offer a 13" MacBook Pro, which is limited to 35W processors, to come in a quad-core configuration. The processors will also have a configurable TDP, meaning parts could be configured on the fly to max out at a higher or lower TDP depending on certain configurations. A MacBook Air is designed for a 17W TDP. An ULVIvyBridge processor could be limited to 13W TDP while running on battery power (and hence, likely sitting on someone's lap).
Ivy Bridge's die shrink also makes room for significantly more die area to be dedicated to graphics. IvyBridge processors will have 1.48 billion transistors, nearly half a billion more than SandyBridge. From what we now about Intel's promised graphics performance—OpenCL 1.1, OpenGL 3.1, and DX11—most of those transistors are going towards GPU improvements. Intel has promised a 60 percent improvement in GPU performance; that still won't be enough for serious gamers, but it does mean that more games will certainly be playable even on a MacBook Air.
Intel also revealed a few details of IvyBridge's replacement, codenamed Haswell. The company says the design is complete, and showed off a working prototype during an IDF presentation. While not many details have been revealed, it's clear that low-power mobile computing is the name of Haswell's game. While mobile IvyBridge processors range from about 35-45W, Intel designed Haswell for a 10-20W power envelop. Effectively the kind of processing power you currently get from a MacBook Pro could fit into a MacBook Air.
Intel claims that Haswell CPUs will use as little as 30 percent less power than a comparable IvyBridge part—already a pretty significant savings. But the platform as a whole, including a revised power management architecture, can wring out as much as 20 times the battery life in what it calls a "connected standby" mode. "The idea here," according to AnandTech, "is to be able to put your notebook to sleep and have it continually fetch cloud updates (e-mail, IMs, tweets) for up to 10 days on a single charge." Real-world usage is said to be "all day," so we're thinking for current notebooks that manage 5-7 hours of battery life that could mean more like 8-12 hours. 
It's clear that Intel is targeting Haswell for its ultrabook initiative, which calls for thin, lightweight laptops with instant on capabilities and the ability to run for a full day on a single battery charge. In doing so, Intel is making Steve Jobs' proclamation that the MacBook Air represented the future of notebooks perhaps more prescient than many originally believed.

Wawanesa Insurance Deploys Guidewire Solution for Claims Management


The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company, which provides coverage to almost 2 million policyholders in Canada and the United States, and Guidewire Software®, a leading provider of core systems software to Property/Casualty (general) insurers, has announced that Wawanesa is in production with Guidewire ClaimCenter®.
Wawanesa is deploying ClaimCenter to manage claims for all its lines of business across its Canadian and U.S. jurisdictions in a phased implementation approach. ClaimCenter is currently in use in four regions (Manitoba, Ontario, British Columbia, and the U.S. Operations in California and Oregon,) with the remaining jurisdictions (Maritimes, Quebec, Prairie and Alberta) due to roll out late August through the end of 2011. The company is on target to retire its legacy claims systems by the end of 2011.

Salesforce CEO maintains Vmware is not into cloud computing

Salesforce Chairman and CEO Marc Benioff pulled no punches on the competition in a roundtable Q&A session at Dreamforce 2011 last week where he said VMware and virtualization are important, but don't fit into his and Salesforce's vision of cloud computing.
"I watched the VMware keynote this week," Benioff added (referring to VMware CEO Paul Maritz's keynote address at VMworld in Las Vegas), "They talked about how they have like 50 percent now of the total market of servers that they are on, if I got the number right, and that they have loaded their software onto 50 percent of all servers and that they're that much more efficient and then they said 'and now they're all clouds.' That's now where you got my attention, because putting virtual machines on servers is great and I understand they call it private clouds, but our vision of cloud computing is not that."
VMware did not respond to CRN's request to comment. In the VMworld keynote last week, Maritz said: "We're not immune from cloud fever, we also tend to use this term a lot." Maritz laid out VMware's cloud stack and discussed its charge into the cloud computing market. Maritz also detailed VMware's Cloud Foundry Platform-as-a-Service play, which will compete directly against Salesforce's cloud development platforms like Heroku and Force.com
But Benioff said Martiz's and VMware's private cloud vision isn't cloud computing as he understands it.
"Our vision of cloud computing is multi-tenancy, shared systems and public networks run as a 24x7 public trusted service …," Benioff continued. "If you're talking about more hardware or if you're talking about more software, it's not about the cloud. And the cloud is really this next generation of computing and that's new software and that's new services."
According to Benioff, Salesforce is targeting companies looking to keep close contact with their customers and to create that relationship, Salesforce's social enterprise combines social, mobile and open cloud elements to transform a business.
"We're not selling components. We're not selling virtual machines," Benioff said. "We're not selling hardware. We're selling social enterprise and it's the cloud that makes it possible." While Benioff said that Salesforce still has a strong relationship with VMware -- which Benioff considers a "tremendous" Salesforce partner -- the pair's VMforce partnership for Java development in the cloud may be dissolving slightly as Salesforce adds Java support to Heroku, a Ruby-based development platform Salesforce acquired last year. Though Benioff said VMware's SpringSource technology is integrated into Heroku for Java.
 Benioff said there's a good way for network managers to determine whether a vendor is offering true cloud computing services or virtualization.
"Some of those companies are software companies," he said, according to CloudPro. "They have versions with numbers after it. That is when you know you are dealing with software; if you hear about versions, you know you are not in the cloud." Benioff also dismissed the notion that virtualization is necessary as a migration tool to the cloud, telling attendees at a Q&A session, "I obviously don't believe that and I don't believe we need more software."
"The deviation between Salesforce and VMware is: VMware, VM, virtual machine; they're about virtual machines and about virtualization," Benioff said. "We have a different approach to cloud computing, which is public services."

Firm Announces Investigation of Juniper Networks

Beginning on July 20, 2010, Juniper Networks's fiduciaries allegedly issued improper statements to investors that failed to reflect adverse material facts about technical issues with the company's SRX product line, the impact of increased competition from rival security providers, and high turnover in the company's sales force.
Also at this time, Juniper Networks's Chief Executive Officer Kevin R. Johnson, along with other senior executives, allegedly engaged in a coordinated insider trading scheme to reap over $146.5 million in illicit proceeds from stock options sold while the company traded at inflated prices.
Then, on July 26, 2011, Juniper Networks issued a press release announcing disappointing second quarter results for fiscal year 2011. The press release acknowledged that growth during the quarter was far below Juniper Networks's previous guidance and that, as a result, the company would be forced to lower its full-year guidance for 2011. On this news, shares of Juniper Networks fell considerably to close to $31.17 on July 26, 2011, and then to $24.66 on July 27, 2011.

Oracle, HP, IBM activities come under FBI bribery investigations

There are reports that Oracle is under investigation by the US Department of Justice, the SEC and the FBI for bribery in West and Central Africa. Oracle could face stiff penalties of up to $2 million per incident under the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act which makes it illegal to bribe a government official anywhere in the world. In 2008 Siemens settled its FCPA case with the Feds for an unprecedented $1.6 billion on fines and disgorgement of profits. this would not be unconnected with several complaints from competitors especially in Nigeria where Oracle is in stiff competition with Microsoft, SAP and even IBM for big bucks government sector businesses.

It is expected that Oracle would cooperate fully and quickly with investigators because Federal sentencing guidelines allow for a reduction in penalties in the event of wrong doing if the firm can demonstrate the incident was an anomaly and that it gnerally has an effective compliance and ethics program in place. But avoiding a fine maybe only half the battle. The biggest bottom line impact could be the potential loss of business upon conviction if Oracle is banned from public sector contracting in many countries. Such was the fate of Siemens.

Important to note that no one knows the scale of the alleged offences under investigation nor the strength of the government’s case at this point in time. However, it is public knowledge about the broader scale of the corruption problem in Africa and its consequences. Take Oracle’s West Africa main base Cote d’Ivoire - it ranks an alarming 146th as one of the most corrupt countries on earth in the Transparency International Corruption Perception Index, life expectancy is a miserable 58 years with an average of 3.3 years of education provision and 23% of the population living on less than $1.25 per day.

In fact, Larry Ellison’s personal net worth of $39.5 billion according to Forbes exceeds Cote d’Ivoire’s GNP of $34.5 billion as estimated by the World Bank. Clearly, West African countries such as Cote d’Ivoire are economically vulnerable and create a vortex of social pressure for anyone doing business there. Under conditions of weak local enforcement and weak internal controls, companies can equally be pressured to succumb to the apparent norm of bribing (demand) or they can take their own permission to do so (supply). The results can be tragic as the German Ministry for International development puts it: "Corruption is one cause of poverty. It impedes poverty reduction. Poverty is one cause of corruption. It impedes the fight against corruption".

News of the investigation comes after a run of high profile challenges to Oracle’s reputation including removal from the Nasdaq OMX Sustainability index for lack of sustainability reporting, removal from the FTSE4Good Index for lack of Human Rights protections and a hostile shareholder resolution demanding a board sub committee for sustainability to ensure Oracle ‘walks its talk’ on sustainability.

HP is also currently under investigation for alleged bribery in Russia and IBM settled its FCPA case earlier this year for $10 million. IBM was accused of bribing for business in China and Korea and was found by the SEC to have had ‘deficient internal controls’. According to FTSE4Good criteria the entire tech industry, if engaged in public contracting in high risk countries, must be rated as high risk for bribery. The leading NGO/ think tank on the issue, Transparency International describes the problem of public contracting in high risk countries in its most recent annual report:

The enormous amounts of money flowing from government budgets through procurement create ideal opportunities for corruption. Contracts can be awarded without fair competition and politically connected companies can be favoured over competitors. Companies within the same industry can rig their bids, so each company gets a piece of the pie. Available research shows that corruption can add on as much as 50 per cent of a contract’s value.

The curious thing about the tech sector’s vulnerability to the risk of corruption is that of late it has celebrated the motherhood and apple pie virtues of sustainability for value creation. Its hard then to square up the problems at IBM, HP and Oracle with the promise of a Smarter Planet, A Connected World and an Eco Enterprise respectively. In recent years sustainability has become something of a gold rush though innovators would do well to remember to also take care of the basic hygiene factors - like corruction.
