For Tech shoppers, Viewsonic Unveil 3 Tablets, other gadgets


Viewsonic has brought out a new collection of holiday shopping gadgets which comprise the ViewPad 7x, ViewPad 7e, and ViewPad 10pro tablets, V3D245 and V3D231 3D monitors, along with PJD5523w 3D Ready Projection. This selection debuted at Pepcom’s media event which showcases gadgets and devices for the holiday season.
The PJD5523w 3D Ready Projection displays a widescreen 1280 x 800 WXGA native resolution. Also, it features high brightness level with 2,700 ANSI lumens and 3.000:1 contrast ratio. It offers a native 720p HD image with 1080p Full HD signal capabilities and an HDMI port as well.
“This holiday season, we anticipate consumers will have a special affinity toward gifts that offer their loved ones the very latest in personal entertainment,” said Jeff Volpe, President, ViewSonic Americas. “From new dual OS and Android tablets, to 3D projection solutions, and 3D monitors compatible with everything from your PC to your media player console, ViewSonic is sure to have the perfect gift for the techno enthusiast on your list this year.”
The ViewPad 7e sits comfortably on the low-end of tablets, and should be one of the more inexpensive options as it becomes available worldwide. It's a 7-inch tablet, designed largely as an ebook reader; it comes with Kindle software installed. Few details are known, but it's clear that the 7e will be running a pre-Honeycomb (and thus phone-optimized) version of Android, its aspect ratio is 4:3 rather than the 16:9 on most Android tablets, and it will be inexpensive as tablets go. Rather than a one-tablet-fits-all approach, Viewsonic wants to tailor its tablets to specific users and use cases. Its product range is pretty wide at this point, and the company shows no sign of slowing down.
The ViewPad 7x is a 7-inch tablet powered with the Nvidia Tegra 2 Dual Core A9 1GHz processor and Android Honeycomb version 3.2 operating system. It features a 5MP main and a 2MP secondary camera on the outside, along with an HDMI output. Other specifications include 1080p full HD capabilities, DLNA connectivity, and SRS surround sound.
Running on the Gingerbread 2.3 OS, the ViewPad 7e is a 7-inch tablet powered by a 1GHz processor. Also integrated with a Flash version 10.3, it provides access to Amazon services for Android, including the Kindle app. On the other hand, the ViewPad 10pro with dual OS is a 10.1-inch device embedded with an Intel 1.5GHz Atom Oak Trail processor Z670. With Windows 7 as the primary operating system, Android 2.3 runs as an application to enable easy switching. The device features a 1.3MP camera and offers 1080p full HD resolution.
Other two gadgets to color the holidays include the 3D monitor V3D245 & V3D231, the former being a 24-inch device while the latter measuring an inch less. Both LED monitors are designed to be compatible with 3D Blu-ray players and PS3s, along with other PC- and console-based devices. Embedded with SRS Premium Sound audio speakers, the monitors also possess HDMI 1.4 input.
The V3D245 3D monitor is now available at a price of $499 (approx Rs. 23, 845), inclusive of a pair of Nvidia 3D Vision active stereo 3D glasses. The ViewPad 10pro can also be purchased now at a price of $599 (approx Rs. 28, 623) for the Windows 7 Home Premium (16GB SSD hard drive) with Android 2.3 version. The price for the same operating system paired with Windows 7 professional (32GB SSD hard drive) would be $699 (approx N110,000), while the PJD5523w 3D Ready projector comes with a price tag of $599 (approx N95,000). The ViewPad 7x and ViewPad 7e is already in the Nigerian market and is available at a price of $379 (approx N70,000).

Major Mobile Brands pledge support for Isis m-commerce standards

Isis, the joint venture between AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless, announced today that HTC, LG, Motorola Mobility, RIM, Samsung Mobile and Sony Ericsson will introduce NFC-enabled mobile devices that implement Isis' NFC and technology standards. For consumers who have or purchase smartphones that are not NFC-enabled, Isis is working with DeviceFidelity to add NFC functionality to the mobile device, ensuring a wide range of consumer choice.
"Isis' technology standards provide the direction and certainty needed for the development and deployment of NFC devices and the mobile commerce ecosystem," said Scott Mulloy, chief technology officer, Isis. "Working together with the device makers and our founding mobile carriers, Isis can provide the consumer choice and scale necessary for widespread adoption of mobile commerce."
NFC-enabled phones will allow Isis consumers to securely make payments, store and present loyalty cards and redeem offers at participating merchants with the tap of their phones. Nokia, Pearson, Airtel, Train Public School Teachers in Lagos


Global phone maker, Nokia, Pearson Foundation, and leading telecommunications service provider, Airtel Nigeria have completed the training of teachers in Public Schools in Lagos State on the use of mobile technology to deliver rich media content to students in their classrooms.
The teachers, 62 in all from 32 public schools in Lagos State were trained under the Airtel, Nokia, and Pearson Foundation technology-driven education initiative, BridgeIT, in collaboration with the Lagos state government through the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).
The schools are part of a pre-pilot program and the number is expected to grow to more grade levels and subject areas over the next two years. BridgeIT combines mobile technology, the use of mobile phones and teachers to deliver and share high quality educational content in public schools where IT infrastructure may be limited.
Teachers will receive digital educational programming – videos, pictures, text, and audio files – over mobile network already in use in their community, and are empowered to share these materials with students in ways that improve student learning.
The commencement of the pilot BridgeIT programme is a follow up to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Nokia, Pearson, Airtel and Longman with the Lagos State Government early in May, this year.
In the arrangement, while Nokia will provide the technology - a mobile application known as Nokia Education Delivery (NED) - Pearson Foundation, the charitable arm of the world’s largest learning company – Pearson - will provide the educational content. Similarly, Nigeria’s leading telecom operator, Airtel Nigeria, has the duty to provide the network coverage that will enable teachers download the videos to their phones, which are used as instructional materials.
After viewing educational content, students participate in interactive lessons facilitated by teachers who have benefited from professional development workshops that promote collaboration and the use of mobile technology in the classroom. The implementation of the programme begins this academic session in schools drawn mostly from suburban parts of Lagos.
According to a statement from the partners to the BridgeIT, the working of the programme follows a simple technique:  ‘videos are stored on a remote server and organized according to subject and grade. By connecting the mobile phone to a TV or a projector, the teacher can play the videos to a class to illustrate any relevant topic in the school curriculum.’
Besides other major benefits, BridgeIT also offers teachers in public schools a unique opportunity to sharpen their skills and upgrade themselves through well structured professional development efforts.
While the first phase of the implementation of BridgeIT begins this month of September in 32 schools, the consortium have given the assurance that the programme will eventually be extended to many other hundreds of schools in the country in the next three years.
Partners to the programme have individually and collectively reaffirmed their commitment to the intellectual development of the Nigerian child through the BridgeIT programme, stating that the initial focus of the programme would be the critical subjects of Mathematics, English Language and Science.
 “This effort allows students in Nigeria to benefit from the BridgeIT model and extends the Pearson Foundation’s commitment to student achievement and teacher ability across the globe,” explained Pearson Foundation President and CEO Mark Nieker.
On his part, the General Manager of Nokia West Africa, James Rutherfoord said Nokia is actively involved in communities around the world to create tangible social benefits. According to him, Nokia is committed to enhancing the quality of life around the world by using mobile technology to stimulate social and economic development. In his words, “realizing that government cannot shoulder the educational challenges of a developing country like Nigeria alone, Nokia feels a sense of responsibility to contribute its quota in helping to improve the delivery of public educational services by improving both the performance of students and the quality of teaching in our public schools”.
Mr. Rutherfoord further disclosed that workshops have been conducted to train teachers in using the software to optimize their lesson plans using video content. He thanked Airtel for making it possible for the videos to be downloaded over its mobile network.
The BridgeIT model has enjoyed success in the Philippines, Tanzania, Chile, Colombia, and India. Each implementation of the program has been characterized by the utilization of the latest educational technologies, the empowerment of teachers to fully utilize mobile technology in the classroom, and the following of a tailored and focused program for a sustainable, scalable, and replicable implementation in partnership with local education ministries and agencies.

Next-geneveration Intel CPUs to improve mobile graphics and battery life


Intel revealed more details about the planned successors for its current-generation SandyBridge processors at its Intel Developers Forum in San Francisco recently. Coming in the second quarter of 2012 will be IvyBridge, a 22nm die-shrink "tick" to SandyBridge's "toick." IvyBridge will benefit from Intel's new 3D tri-gate transistor technology, offering as much as a 37 percent power efficiency improvement along with what looks like serious integrated graphics improvements. Following that in 2013 will be the 22nm Haswell architecture, which promises "all day" laptop battery life along with up to 10 days of what Intel is calling "connected standby."
Sandy Bridge offered significant performance over last generation Intel CPUs within the same power envelop. Additionally, Intel integrated the GPU onto the same die as the CPU, connecting the two with a shared L3 cache. While Intel has had a pretty poor reputation with its integrated graphics solutions, the architectural improvements finally put the Intel HD3000 IGP included on most mobile SandyBridge chips on par with even low-end discrete GPUs. The performance boost was enough for Apple to ditch NVIDIA GPUs in its MacBook Air and other low-end machines.
Ivy Bridge will mainly be a die shrink of the SandyBridge architecture down to 22nm. To jump down to that process node, Intel basically reinvented how transistors and other components are etched into silicon wafers. The company developed a three-dimensional "tri-gate" transistor which offers serious efficiency improvements over traditional planar design techniques. In particular, it increases the usable frequency at a given voltage level, allowing Intel to either boost the frequency or reduce power—or some combination of the two.
The power savings will matter a great deal for mobile computing, including devices like notebooks and "ultrabooks." For instance, Intel will make an IvyBridge quad-core Core i7 part with a 35W TDP. As AnandTech notes, that means Apple could offer a 13" MacBook Pro, which is limited to 35W processors, to come in a quad-core configuration. The processors will also have a configurable TDP, meaning parts could be configured on the fly to max out at a higher or lower TDP depending on certain configurations. A MacBook Air is designed for a 17W TDP. An ULVIvyBridge processor could be limited to 13W TDP while running on battery power (and hence, likely sitting on someone's lap).
Ivy Bridge's die shrink also makes room for significantly more die area to be dedicated to graphics. IvyBridge processors will have 1.48 billion transistors, nearly half a billion more than SandyBridge. From what we now about Intel's promised graphics performance—OpenCL 1.1, OpenGL 3.1, and DX11—most of those transistors are going towards GPU improvements. Intel has promised a 60 percent improvement in GPU performance; that still won't be enough for serious gamers, but it does mean that more games will certainly be playable even on a MacBook Air.
Intel also revealed a few details of IvyBridge's replacement, codenamed Haswell. The company says the design is complete, and showed off a working prototype during an IDF presentation. While not many details have been revealed, it's clear that low-power mobile computing is the name of Haswell's game. While mobile IvyBridge processors range from about 35-45W, Intel designed Haswell for a 10-20W power envelop. Effectively the kind of processing power you currently get from a MacBook Pro could fit into a MacBook Air.
Intel claims that Haswell CPUs will use as little as 30 percent less power than a comparable IvyBridge part—already a pretty significant savings. But the platform as a whole, including a revised power management architecture, can wring out as much as 20 times the battery life in what it calls a "connected standby" mode. "The idea here," according to AnandTech, "is to be able to put your notebook to sleep and have it continually fetch cloud updates (e-mail, IMs, tweets) for up to 10 days on a single charge." Real-world usage is said to be "all day," so we're thinking for current notebooks that manage 5-7 hours of battery life that could mean more like 8-12 hours. 
It's clear that Intel is targeting Haswell for its ultrabook initiative, which calls for thin, lightweight laptops with instant on capabilities and the ability to run for a full day on a single battery charge. In doing so, Intel is making Steve Jobs' proclamation that the MacBook Air represented the future of notebooks perhaps more prescient than many originally believed.

Wawanesa Insurance Deploys Guidewire Solution for Claims Management


The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company, which provides coverage to almost 2 million policyholders in Canada and the United States, and Guidewire Software®, a leading provider of core systems software to Property/Casualty (general) insurers, has announced that Wawanesa is in production with Guidewire ClaimCenter®.
Wawanesa is deploying ClaimCenter to manage claims for all its lines of business across its Canadian and U.S. jurisdictions in a phased implementation approach. ClaimCenter is currently in use in four regions (Manitoba, Ontario, British Columbia, and the U.S. Operations in California and Oregon,) with the remaining jurisdictions (Maritimes, Quebec, Prairie and Alberta) due to roll out late August through the end of 2011.
